Latvian artists in Sydney: Conductor ANDRIS POGA, Violin BAIBA SKRIDE
Wagner, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky share the stage in a concert that appeals to the imagination and the heart.
Latvian violinist Baiba Skride made her SSO debut in 2010, wowing listeners with her gorgeous sound and authoritative style. Now she’s back to play Prokofiev. In the First Violin Concerto his trademark brilliance and bite is balanced by dreamy lyricism and a fairy tale atmosphere. The soloist could be telling you a story… And we can’t wait to hear it in the hands of this ‘passionate, heart-on-sleeve’ musician. But in this program Tchaikovsky has the last word on passion and exposed hearts. His Pathétique Symphony captures the pain of life, its fleeting joys and fragile triumphs with such intense beauty that he was – rightly so – delighted with the result. The concert begins with the young Wagner in ‘grand opera’ mode taking to the stage with his Rienzi overture: rich in memorable themes and dramatic gestures.
