For the 29th time, just oustide Melbourne, Victoria, Latvian children between the ages of 7 and 13 gathered for Tērvete chidren’s summer camp. This year 27 children participated in the camp which was held 3-9th of January. The 14 boys and 13 girls were a much better demographic compared to last year when there was almost twice as many boys as girls.
As usual, most of the campers were from Melbourne. There was however an ex-Melbournite who had travelled from New Zealand to be with friends, and also from Adelaide. This year there was an influx from Brisbane; 6 children and 5 helpers. That was a great surprise which we hope will continue. For 9 children this camp was their first time here. These children as well as the more experienced campers quickly and confidently fell into the camp rhythm. The fact that new children continue to come and participate gives us confidence that Tērvete children’s summer camp has a bright future.
For many children this was a rare or even first time to sleep in tents. The weather was favourable with day temperatures rarely over 30 degrees and evenings not too cold.
This year the theme at camp was ” Let’s travel the world”. In keeping with this theme, the campers themselves chose names for their tents. In the girls’ camp was Trakie čigāni (Crazy gypsies), Ceļojošās bitītes (Travelling bees), and Vecie smirdīgie vikingi (Old smelly vikings). The boys camp was inhabited by Kuģu puiši (Boat boys), Teleporteri (Teleporters), Latviešu bomži (Latvian hoboes) and Trīs ceļotāji (Three travellers).
As part of the theme “Let’s travel the world” , children learnt the number of continents, number of countries in these continents, the names of some of these countries and recognise many flags. We hope parents won’t be surprised if their children at home start to speak with them in French, Spanish, Chinese or even Swahili. Children learnt not only to recognise famous world objects such as the Egyptian pyramids, Rome’s colosseum, the Eiffel tower and London’s Big Ben but they also helped make these objects from cardboard. The children also made paper mache planets, Swiss cuckoo clocks and Japanese flying fish.
This year the usual obstacle course with its famous mud bath wasn’t run, but a new activity ran in its place, the team relay. Five teams named after various world currency’s were used by competing teams: dinar, euro, shilling, rupee and dong. We challenged the children in team work and skills in various activities – soccer, egg and spoon race, carrying water and people, ball throwing and target hitting.
This year the amazing race was held in the nearby town of Lancefield. It was a great experience for the children as tourists or travellers to walk around their environment. As they walked we checked their knowledge of country flags, languages, sports, eating with chopsticks as well as their observation skills.
The evenings were filled with interesting activities. The first was a games and introduction night, followed by a number of film nights. “Cinema Tērvete” showed two films in Latvian-Kirikou and Madagascar 3. The children loved the evenings playing sports from different countries- hockey with ice, limbo, Finnish skittles, bocce and darts. They also enjoyed the evening where they learnt dances from different countries- the Spanish Maccarena, The Mexican Hat Dance, the German chicken dance, Greek zorba and New Zealand haka.
The hard working kitchen staff also offered food from various countries – American hotdogs, Italian pasta, German schnitzels, Mexican chilli con carne, Indian butter chicken and even Latvian frikadeļa soup and Australian BBQ. Children returned for second and third helpings and showed their thanks with their own thought up poems or songs. Despite this, somehow the children found space for chips, lollies and ice cream at the local Kilmore swimming centre.
The last evening at camp visitors from around the world arrived. There were visitors from ancient and modern Greece, Italy, Spain, Holland, Mexico, USA, Japan and even some travellers who weren’t too sure where they were heading. Tērvete hall transformed into a colourful scene and it was great to see the colourful costumes that people had put so much thought into. All the campers and visitors with a large amount of enthusiasm danced to the live music by Tērvetes own musicians ” Plašais horizonts” (Wide horizon).
The camp community on the last day of camp packed their bags and readied for the closing concert. Children’s parents and visitors arrived and helped pack and store tents, as well as clean and tidy the buildings. For the concert the children sang three songs which they had learnt and showed off their dancing skills. Visitors were also asked to join in the dances. Afterwards the Latvian flag was lowered for the last time at camp and the camp was officially closed.
Overall the week was very successful, without any serious accidents. Everyone was content and happy at the end of the week, although maybe just a little tired. The 29th Tērvete children’s summer camp ran very smoothly thanks to the children’s enthusiasm and willingness to try, and the hard work of the leaders, teachers and many helpers.
Next year will be Tērvete children’s summer camp 30th year. We will eagerly welcome new campers and helpers as well as the experienced ones. The theme next year will be ” Australian Story” . We plan to teach the children about how Aborigines came to live in Australia, after them the English, and then later our parents and grandparents from the Baltics. If anyone has any ideas or stories that may help with this theme, the leaders would love to hear them.
Jau 29. vasaru, Viktorijas laukos ārpus Melburnas pulcējās latviešu bērni starp 7 un 13 gada vecuma lai piedalītos Tērvetes bērnu nometnē. Šogad nometne ilga no 3. līdz 9. janvārim un piedalījās 27 bērni. Bija 14 zēni un 13 meitenes – laba demogrāfiska izmaiņa no pērnā gada, kad bija gandrīz divas reizes vairāk zēnu nekā meitenes.
Kā parasti, vairums nometņotāju bija no Melburnas. Tomēr viena bijušā Melburniete atceļoja no Jaunzēlandes lai būtu kopā ar draugiem un bija arī viens dalībnieks no Adelaides. Bet šogad bija arī manāms ieplūdums no Brisbānes; 6 nometņotāji un 5 darba palīgi. Tas bija patīkams pārsteigums ko ceram turpināsies. Šogad nometnē arī bija 9 bērni, kuri Tērvetes bērnu nometnē piedalījās pirmo reizi. Tomēr visi ļoti veikli un braši iejutās nometnes ritmā līdz ar vairāk pieredzējušiem nometņotājiem. Tas, ka nāk klāt jauni bērni, liecina, ka Tērvetes nometnei ir vēl ilga nākotne.
Vairākiem bērniem šī bija pirmā vai reta pieredze pārnakšņot teltīs. Laika apstākļi bija labvēlīgi. Dienas temperatūra reti pārsniedza 30 grādi un naktis nebija pārāk vēsas.
Nometnes tēma šogad bija “Ceļosim pa pasauli”. Pieturoties pie šīs tēmas, nometņotāji paši izvēlējās savām teltīm nosaukumus. Meiteņu nometnē šogad dzīvoja Trakie čigāni, Ceļojošās bitītes, un Vecie smirdīgie vikingi. Zēnu nometnē dzīvoja Kuģū puiši, Teleporteri, Latviešu bomži un Trīs ceļotāji.
Sakarā ar tēmu “Ceļosim pa pasauli”, bērni mācījās cik pasaulē ir kontinentu, cik valstu ir katrā un nosaukt vairākus vārdā. Viņi arī iemācījās atpazīt ļoti daudz valsts karogus. Ceram, ka vecāki nebūs pārsteigti ja viņu bērni mājās tagad sāks sasveicināties ar viņiem franciski, spāniski, ķīniski, vai pat swahili. Bērni arī ne tikai tika iepazīstināti ar slaveniem pasaules objektiem, piemēram, Ēģiptes piramīdām, Romas kolizeju, Parīzes Eifela torni, Londonas Big Ben; viņi piedalījās šādu objektu papes modeļu būvniecībā, Bērni arī sev uztaisīja zemes lodes, Šveices dzeguža pulksteņus, un Japānas lidojošas zivis.
Šogad nenotika ierastais kavekļu skrējiens, kas beidzas ar slaveno dubļu vannu, bet ieviesām jaunu aktivitāti „Komandu stafeti”. Piedalījās 5 komandas ar dažādu valstu naudu nosaukumiem – dināri, eiro, šilingi, rūpijas un dongi. Pārbaudījām bērnu spējas un sadarbību ļoti dažādās aktivitātes – futbolā (soccer), olu, ūdens un cilvēku nešanā, bumbu mešanā, un mērķa trāpīšanā.
Šogad šķēršļu gājiens notika netālā Lancefielda ciematā. Bērniem bija interesanti kā ceļotājiem vai tūristiem apstaigāt citu vidi. Tur arī pārbaudījām viņu zināšanas par valstu karogiem, valodām, sporta veidiem, ēšanas veidiem, kā arī viņu spējas vērot apkārtni.
Vakaros arī bija interesantas aktivitātes. Bija iepazīšanās un spēļu vakari, kā arī filmizrādes. Šogad “Tērvetes kino” programmā bija divas filmas latviešu valodā –“Kirikū” un “Madagaskara 3”. Bērniem ļoti patika spēles no citām valstīm – hokejs ar ledu, limbo, boči, somu „skittles” un šautriņas. Viņiem arī ļoti patika iemācīties dejas no citām valstīm – Meksikas cepuru deju, spānu Makarēnu, vācu vistas deju, grieķu zorbu un Jaunzelandas haku.
Čaklie virtuves darbinieki arī piedāvāja ēdienus no citām valstīm – amerikāņu karstos suņus, itāļu pastu ar boloņas mērci, vācu šniceles, meksikas čili kon karni, indiešu sviestas vistu, pat frikadeļu zupu no Latvijas un Aussie BBQ. Bērni daudzreiz pieteicās pa divām vai pat trijām reizēm uz maltītēm un vienmēr pateicās pavāriem ar paši izgudrotiem pateicības pantiņiem vai dziesmiņām. Kautkā, tomēr bērni vienmēr vēl atrada vietiņu čipšiem, saldējumiem un konfektēm Kilmoras peldētavas veikaliņā.
Pēdējā vakarā nometnē sanāca dažādi viesi no visas pasaules. Bija ciemiņi no senās un modernās Grieķijas, Itālijas, Spānijas, Holandes, Meksikas, Amērikas, Japānas, un pat vairāki tūristi vai ceļotāji, daži kuri pat nebija droši uz kurieni vīni dodās. Tērvetes lielā zāle pārvērtās raibā un krāšņā ainā un visiem bija interesanti vērot tik daudzus ar lielu izdomu izveidotus kostīmus. Visi nometņotāji un ciemiņi lustīgi un ar lielu enerģiju dejoja un gāja rotaļās pie dzīvās mūzikas, ko atkal piedāvāja Tērvetes pašmājās muzikanti “Plašais horizonts”.
Pēdejā dienā nometnes saime pakoja somas un gatavojās uz noslēguma aktu. Ieradās bērnu vecāki un citi ciemiņi, kuri arī palīdzēja novākt teltis, nolikt iekārtas noliktavās, un sakārtot un satīrīt telpas. Aktā bērni nodziedāja viesiem trīs dziesmas kuras bija iemācījušās un tad parādīja savas dejošanas spējas. Viesi arī tika uzaicināti padancot. Pēc tam nolaida karogu pēdējo reizi un slēdza šī gada nometni.
Kopumā nedēļa pagāja veiksmīgi, bez īpašiem nopietniem atgadījumiem. Visi bija priecīgi, kaut līdz nedēļas beigām varbūt nedaudz noguruši. Pateicoties visu bērnu sajūsmas pilnai līdzdalībai un sadarbībai, un vadītāju, skolotāju, saimniecības darbinieku un citu palīgu laika, pūļu un enerģijas pašaizliedzīgam ziedojumam, 29. Tērvetes bērnu vasaras nometne noritēja gludi.
Nākamgad būs BVN 30. gadu jubilejas nometni. Gaidīsim atkal vecus un jaunus nometņotājus, kā arī darbiniekus. Nometnes tēma būs „Austrālijas stāsts”. Plānojam, ka bērni varēsi apgūt zināšanas par to kā aborigēni nonāca un dzīvoja Austrālijā, pēc viņiem Anglijas kolonisti, un tad baltieši – mūsu vecāki un vecvecāki. Ja kādam būtu labas idejas vai labi stāsti, kas ieder šajā tēmā, vadība labprāt jūs uzklausītu.
