In 2016, Latvia is the presiding country within the framework of the trilateral cooperation of the Baltic States – at the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council of Ministers – as well as the coordinating country for Baltic and Nordic cooperation in the NB8 format.
In view of the current challenges in Europe and across the globe, Latvia has the opportunity to work effectively on strengthening of security in the region, while focused on specific priorities in each of these traditional platforms for cooperation between the Baltic and Nordic countries.
The Baltic and Nordic cooperation takes place in a family atmosphere. Our countries are bound by shared goals and challenges, and common values. Closer ties among Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia and working together in a framework with the Nordic countries are a cornerstone of Latvia’s foreign policy. This year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of international recognition of the renewal of the Baltic States’ independence in August 1991. It’s noteworthy that in 2016, the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Offices in Riga, Tallinn and Vilnius also mark the 25th year of their work.
Priorities of the Latvian Presidency are strengthening of security within the region, promotion of strategic communication, and development of transport and energy infrastructure.

2016. gadā Latvija prezidē Baltijas valstu trīspusējās sadarbības ietvaros – Baltijas Asamblejā un Baltijas Ministru padomē, kā arī koordinē Baltijas valstu un Ziemeļvalstu sadarbību NB-8 ietvaros.
Ievērojot pašreizējos izaicinājumus Eiropā un pasaulē, 2016. gadā Latvijai ir iespēja arī šajos tradicionālajos Baltijas valstu un Ziemeļvalstu sadarbības ietvaros mērķtiecīgi strādāt pie drošības stiprināšanas reģionā, katrā no tiem fokusējoties uz konkrētām sadarbības prioritātēm.
Baltijas un Ziemeļvalstu sadarbību raksturo ģimenes sajūta. Mūs vieno kopīgi mērķi un izaicinājumi, un kopīgas vērtības. Latvijas, Igaunijas un Lietuvas ciešās savstarpējās saites un sadarbība ar Ziemeļvalstīm ir bijis Latvijas ārpolitikas stūrakmens. 2016. gads ir īpašs mūsu sadarbībā, jo aprit 25 gadi kopš Baltijas valstu neatkarības atjaunošanas starptautiskās atzīšanas 1991. gada augustā. Zīmīgi, ka šogad savas darbības 25. gadu atzīmē arī Ziemeļu Ministru padomes biroji Rīgā, Tallinā un Viļņā.
Latvijas prezidentūras prioritātes ir drošības striprināšana reģionā, stratēģiskās komunikācijas veicināšana un transporta un enerģētikas infrastruktūŗu attīstība.
