“For Latvia, and the future of our people”
Valdis Zatlers, who served as the seventh President of the Republic of Latvia (from 2007 to 2011), will be visiting Latvian communities around Australia this November, as guest of honour for Latvian Independence Day commemorations.
Before entering politics, Valdis Zatlers was a medical doctor, specialising in traumatology and orthopaedics. Whilst working as Head of the Traumatology Department at the City of Rīga Number 2 Hospital, he was also part of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster response team despatched to Ukraine, where he served as Medical Services Officer, immediately following the catastrophe. From 1988 to 1989 Zatlers was active in renewing the Latvian Physicians Association, a body for which he later served as Board member. He was also a founding member of the Latvian Arthroscopy Association in 1990, and served as their President until 1993. In 1990/1991, Zatlers completed further studies in orthopaedics at Yale and Syracuse Universities in the United States of America, following which, he introduced the use of arthroscopy in the clinical practice of joint disease diagnosis and treatment in Latvia.
From 1994 until his election as President of the Republic of Latvia in 2007, Zatlers served as Director, and later, Chairman of the Board of the Traumatology and Orthopaedics Hospital in Riga. Additionally, from 2003 until 2008, Zatlers was head of the Latvian Traumatologist and Orthopaedic Surgeon Association.
During the period of Soviet occupation, Zatlers was never a member of the Communist Party. He became actively involved in politics with the formation of the Popular Front of Latvia (LTF), and served as a committee member for the LTF from 1988 to 1989. Following this, he only re-entered active political life with his election as President of the Republic of Latvia.
Perhaps the most noteworthy political legacy of Valdis Zatlers is his stand against corruption and political manipulation at the hands of oligarchs. In 2011, he became the first (and only) Latvian President to invoke the constitutional power for a president to trigger a referendum on the dissolution of parliament, following the refusal by parliament to allow corruption investigations into the activities of a parliamentary member. It is significant to note that Zatlers continues to be one of the most vocal and active advocates against corruption and manipulation by oligarchs, warning against public apathy in prosecuting this important cause.
Mr.Zatler’s Australian visit will provide a great opportunity, not only for Latvian community members in eight cities to hear his insights, but also for a broader discussion on the coming parliamentary elections scheduled for next year, presentations to Latvian organisations, meetings with Australian politicians, city mayors, etc.
This year’s guest of honour will participate in Latvian Independence Day ceremonies in Perth, Hobart, Brisbane, Cairns, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.

The visit of the guest of honour for the Latvian Independence Day commemorations has been arranged with financial assistance from the Culture Ministry of the Republic of Latvia.
Valdis Zatlers ir latviešu politiķis, kādreizējais Latvijas Valsts prezidents (2007. – 2011).
Līdz tam viņš bija ārsts, traumatologs ortopēds, Traumatoloģijas un ortopēdijas slimnīcas valdes priekšsēdētājs un kā medicīniskā dienesta virsnieks tika nosūtīts uz Ukrainu, lai piedalītos Černobiļas AES katastrofas likvidācijas darbos. No 1988. līdz 1989. gadam V. Zatlers bija Latvijas ārstu biedrības atjaunošanas grupas aktīvists un vēlāk šīs biedrības domes loceklis. 1990. gadā dibināja Latvijas artroskopijas asociāciju, līdz 1993. gadam bija arī tās prezidents. No 1990. līdz 1991. gadam V. Zatlers 6 mēnešus papildināja zināšanas ortopēdijā Yale universitātē un Syracuse universitātē ASV, pēc atgriešanās Latvijā viņš sekmīgi ieviesa klīniskajā praksē locītavu slimību diagnostiku un ārstēšanu ar artroskopijas metodēm.
No 1994. līdz kļūšanai par Valsts prezidentu 2007. gadā V. Zatlers vadīja Traumatoloģijas un ortopēdijas slimnīcu, būdams tās direktors, no 2004. gada arī valdes priekšsēdētājs. Līdztekus viņš no 2003. līdz 2008. gadam vadīja Latvijas Traumatologu ortopēdu asociāciju.
Latvijas okupācijas gados V. Zatlers nebija PSKP biedrs.Trešās atmodas laikā viņš aktīvi iesaistījās Latvijas Tautas frontē, no 1988. līdz 1989. gadam bija tās Domes loceklis. Vēlāk politikā nav darbojies līdz ievēlēšanai par Valsts prezidentu.
Tomēr, iespējams kā vispaliešokākais fakts ir tas, ka Valdis Zatlers savā prezidentūras laikā 2011. gadā, ierosināja referendumu par 10. Saeimas atlaišanu. Nozīmīgi ir pieminēt, ka V. Zatlers arī šobrīd ir visvairāk izteicies un aicinājis Latvijas iedzivotājiem nebūt vienaldzīgiem un atajunot izskatīt “oligarhu” lietu.
Zatlera kunga vizīte Austrālijā būs bagāta – uzrunājot tautiešus astoņās Austrālijas pilsētās, Valsts svētku ietvaros, piedaloties debatēs par nākošā gada vēlēšanām, uzrunājot baltiešu kopienas, tiekoties ar Austrālijas politķiem, pilsētas galvām utt.
