Considering the long, grueling hours of practice, rehearsal, and concertizing it takes to be a professional musician, it’s no surprise that musicians often hook up with other musicians: Robert and Clara Schumann, Mstislav Rostropovich and Galina Vishnevskaya, Joan Sutherland and Richard Bonynge, Arthur Gold and Robert Fizdale. The most glamorous recent additions to this list are Andris Nelsons, the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and his wife, Kristine Opolais, the ravishing soprano. It was Puccini who brought them together. Back in their native Latvia he was down in the pit conducting La Bohème; she was onstage as the consumptive Mimi. Beautiful music ensued, both onstage and off.
Last August, the couple—he’s 37, she’s 36—were exhausted but radiant after a rare joint appearance at Tanglewood, the B.S.O.’s magical summer home in the Berkshires. While lamenting the difficulties of spending time together and raising a four-year-old daughter in the face of so much travel for work, the two were already excited about their co-appearances this month at Boston’s Symphony Hall, where Opolais is slated to sing the celebrated letter scene from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin with Nelsons at the helm of the B.S.O. “You don’t have to make a grand, exaggerated sound to sing opera,” says Nelsons, who encourages his wife to sing and act naturalistically. “I feel freedom with Andris,” Opolais says, “because he never tries to fix you. I feel very safe with him onstage.”

Jaunākais papildinājums šajā sarakstā ir Andris Nelsons, Bostonas Simfoniskā orķestra mūzikas direktors, un viņa sieva, valdzinošais soprāns, Kristīne Opolais. Tas bija Puccini, kas saveda viņus kopā. Dzimtajā Latvijā viņš orķestra bedrē diriģēja La Boheme, viņa – uz skatuves spēlēja diloņslimnieci Mimi. Ar skaistu mūziku viņi uzsāka savu kopdzīvi.
Pagājušā gada augustā pāris – viņam 37 gadi, viņai 36 – bija noguruši bet joprojām starojoši pēc retas kopīgas uzstāšanās Tanglewood, Bostonas Simfoniskā Orķestra brīnišķīgā vasaras mājā, Berkšīrā. Viņi stāsta, ka daudz laika jāpavada ceļojot ar darbu, un tamdēļ grūti atrast laiku kopābūšanai un audzināt savu četrus gadus veco meitu. Abi ir sajūsmā par iespēju šomēnes uzstāties kopā Bostonas Simfoniskā koncertzālē, kur Opolais dziedās slaveno ,,vēstules” ārīju no Pētera Čaikovska Jevgeņijs Oņegins, kamēr Nelsons diriģēs orķestri. ,,Lai dziedātu operu, nav ,,jāpārspēlē” ” saka Nelsons, mudinot sievu dziedāt un tēlot dabiski. ,,Andris dod man brīvības sajūtu,” saka Opolais, ,,jo viņš nekad nemēģina mani labot. Viņš man liek justies ļoti droši, kad esmu uz skatuves.”
