Latvia has a rich history, and younger generations will benefit from maintaining cultural links such as this.
It is the only Latvian radio program in Australia
Latvian language broadcasts enrich the lives of many Older Latvians living in Australia, all of whom have made an important contribution, , one way or another, to Australia’s culture, lifestyle, and economy. They have earned the right to hear radio broadcasts in their native language, at least one hour per week..
SBS was set up to create an outlet for different languages, wasn’t it?
Latvian elderly, and I mean very elderly, don’t do internet. They prefer radio.
The Whitlam government made a grave error in dismissing the interests of the Latvian community in Australia when it recognised the incorporation of Latvia into the Soviet Union. It would be more than foolish for the present Government to make a similar mistake by eliminating the SBS Latvian language broadcasts
Latvians deserve to have local radio in our own language. It’s a no brainer.
Exposure to other cultures, languages enriches all communities.
Latvians should have the same privilege as other nationalities to hear news in their native language and from their former country.
SBS Radio has been a cornerstone of Australia’s successful multicultural policy.
Being an older poor Latvian speaker I need all the language input I can get to maintain my competence.
To help preserve Latvian language and culture in Australia
to help save my cultural heritage
It is important for people to continue to be able to hear their native language for many reasons.eg to get news from Latvia, to keep the Latvian language alive, to keep memories of Latvia alive in people’s minds and also to help younger people learn the language . People enjoy hearing their native tongue. Im sure there are many other reasons as well .
I feel its very important to support my Latvian community as Latvian is my first language and English is my second language. We need our radio programme and it is beneficial to all not to forget about the elderly Latvian community that benefit from the Latvian language program on SBS.
Australia needs more Latvian culture – especially for those who identify as Latvian.
I became an Aussie in 1950 I was 13 years old I relinquished my Latvian heritage because of the Soviet Invasion of the Baltic Freedom arrived in 1991 Latvia became a member of the United Nations it was one of the members of the League of Nations and thus has a special place in the annals of Peace Note that Riga the Capital of Latvia was founded in 1200 long before Cook entered Oceania and Phillip landed in Sydney Cove on 26 January 1788 you probably are transgressing the Charter of SBS
we need to connect with our Latvian communities both here and abroad.
Don’t be an indian giver SBS. This very important, especially for the senior folks in the community!
In such a multicultural country as Australia it is important to recognize and support every culture and Latvian is one of many and as important as any.
My Mum passed away recently. She was my last remaining accessible interface with the Latvian language. My 2 sons, also fluent have moved away into wider Australia. The SBS program is their only remaining source for hearing the Latvian spoken word.
maintaining ethnic diversity
asked by a Latvian friend support cause
Mr Colla even if there was 1 listener in ANY language it is important to honour the heritage of the rich tapestry of Australia. Australian politics and economics is dangerously becoming monocultural and with this comes the impending collapse of a just, respectful and inclusive society
Because Latvian language is spoken by a minority, and all minority languages must be preserved. They are a key to understanding the truth of the past.
I listen to the radio to help keep my language skills alive.
One word- unfair. Please show numbers of other minorities -are their broadcasts also terminated?
I am a Latvian
Latvians need to hear their language on Australian radio.

Latvian radio program helps Latvians stay in touch
Older generation of Latvians rely on this for news about Latvian community activities in all states
When faced with a merger with ABC this is a dumb decision. Maybe a merger will creat the savings to keep community languages alive.
