Ancient Latvian beliefs include a range of Easter traditions, including: Rising early on Easter morning will bring good fortune for the following year and erecting and using temporary swings will ensure you won’t sleep away the coming year. It was also believed that a switching with pussy-willow will bring good health.
Not all of these traditions have made it through to our modern times, however, there are some that are still regularly adhered to in the Easter celebrations of many Latvian families.
Colouring and decorating chicken eggs, followed by “egg fights” to see whose egg shell will be the last one intact, is an activity that is a mainstay at many gatherings of Latvian families and friends at Easter time.
We take great joy from the fact that such traditions are not only remembered, but also actively maintained. Every year, Easter Sunday sees the gathering of Latvian families and friends to celebrate this day. We each have our own individual traditions and customs and our own individual basket of eggs! This year, we wish to highlight a particular gathering of Easter revellers in Melbourne, who can proudly boast a combined achievement of having, so far, celebrated a total of 450 Easter Sundays between them. Senlatviešu tradīcijas ir bagātīgas – Lieldienu rītā esot agri jāceļās, jo tad visu gadu būšot laime; esot daudz jāšūpojas, jo tad visu gadu strādājot nenākšot miegs. Ticējumos arī saka, ka pēriens ar pūpoliem ir labs, jo tam sekojot veselība.
Ne visas no tradīcijām vairs tiek piekoptas mūsdienās, tomēr dažas liekas spēj izdzīvot garu, jo garu mūžu.
Olu krāsošana un olu kaujas,tiek piekoptas daudzu ģimeņu un draugu pulkos, un protams tiek baudītas gardās pashas vai kuličs, tradīcijas, kas nāk no vecticībniekiem.
Ir prieks, ka tradīcijas ne vien ir saglabātas, bet arī tiek turpinātas.
Katru gadu, Lieldienu svētdienā sanāk kopā latvieši – ģimenes un draugi, lai kopīgi priecātos par šo īpašo dienu. Mums katram ir savas, īpašas tradīcijas un savi, īpaši olu grozi!
