The air temperature approached 40 degrees celsius as Sydney’s Latvian school children and parents symbolically began the new school year throwing themselves into the swimming carnival organised by the ‘Spars’ sports group at Enfield aquatic centre. Informally but with a quiet resolve, the school began its 61st year of teaching. Some students participated in the more formal honouring of the Latvian centenary flag and Sydney Latvian Society organised Parnell street party at the end of January.
The school continues to be lead by Daiva Tuktēna and the many parent helpers who come to her aid, as well as a group of teachers who willingly and selflessly share their time and knowledge teaching the children. Last year three students graduated and this year it may be an even larger group (provisionaly on the 11th of November). The youngest generation on their part replenish student numbers in the younger classes.
The school’s role in the wider Latvian community is significant with five teachers participating in Annas Ziedares Summer High School. Some families also participated in the 3×3 family camp at Falls Creek in Victoria and the recent Cultural Festival in Melbourne. This year three students will participate in the ‘Sveika, Latvija’ programme, which is a two week intensive tour introducing teenagers aged 13-15 years of age living outside of Latvia to Latvian culture, geography and people. ‘Sveika, Latvija’ is organised by the American Latvian Association in which teenagers from Australia and Canada can also join. We hope to share in the second half of the year the teenagers thoughts about this special tour.
In the first half of this year Ilona Brūvere will also work hard with the school children to prepare them for a theatre performance, which will include the younger and older children. The specific theatre performance will not be revealed just yet, but we can assure you that it has not previously been seen! In the long term we begin to prepare for the Youth Festival at the end of this year, and the next 3×3 family camp which is planned for January 2018 close to Sydney.

Sydney Latvian school is held at Sydney Latvian Society House on Saturday’s from 9:30-13:00. We welcome everyone to come along and get to know our school community and share lunch with us at 12:00. Jauns mācību gads Sidnejas latviešu skolā
Gaisa temperatūra tuvojās 40C kad Sidnejas latviešu skolas bērni un vecāki simboliski atsāka jauno mācību gadu metoties Enfield baseinā sporta kopas „Spars” rīkotajās peldēšanas sacensības. Pavisam neformāli, bet tomēr mērķtiecīgi, skola iekustināja savu sešdesmitpirmo mācību gadu. Atsevišķi skolēni formālākā veidā piedalījās Latvijas simtgades karoga sveikšanā, SLB rīkotājos Parnell ielas svētkos janvāra beigās.
Skolu šogad turpina vadīt Daiva Tuktēna un viņai palīgā atkal nāk liels skaits bērnu vecāku, kā arī skolotāju kodols, kas labprātīgi un nesavtīgi dalās ar laiku un zināšanām apmācot skolas bērnus. Skolu pagājušā gadā beidz trīs absolventes, un paredzams, ka šogad (provizoriski 11. novembrī) absolvēs vēl lielāka grupa. Visjaunākā paaudze, savukārt, atjauno skolēnu skaitu pirmajās klasēs.
Skolas loma plašākā latviešu sabiedrībā vērojama ar piecu skolēnu līdzdalību Annas Ziedares vasaras vidusskolā. Dažas ģimenes arī piedalījās 3×3 nometnē Falls Creek, Viktorijā un apmeklēja Kultūras dienas Melburnā. Šogad trīs skolēni ir iecerējuši piedalīties “Sveika, Latvija” programmā, kas divu intensīvu nedēļu ilgajā braucienā pa visu valsti iepazīstina ārpus Latvijas dzīvojošus latviešu jauniešus (vecumā no 13 līdz 15 gadiem) ar Latvijas kultūru, vidi un cilvēkiem. “Sveika, Latvija” rīko Amerikas Latviešu apvienība, bet tajā piedalās arī bērni no Austrālijas un Kanadas. Ceram gada otrajā pusē dalīties ar bērnu ieskatiem un iespaidiem par šo vienreizējo braucienu.
Vēl šinī gada pusē Ilonas Brūveres vadībā skola cītīgi gatavojas teātrim, kas uz skatuves pulcinās pašus jaunākos un vecākos bērnus. Teātra saturu vēl neatklāsim, bet varam apgalvot, ka tas iepriekš nav redzēts! Garākā laika skatījumā gatavojamies piedalīties arī Jaunatnes Dienās šī gada beigās, un nakošajā 3×3 nometnē, kas paredzēta Sidnejas apkārtnē 2018. gada janvārī.
