The annual “Sveika Latvija” educational tour provides the opportunity for youth with Latvian heritage from U.S.A, Australia and Canada, to experience a guided first-hand introduction to the land of their forebears. Two Sveika Latvija tours were conducted from 9th to 23rd June, and from the 10th to 24th August, this year.
One of the special traditions of these tours is a meeting with the President of the Republic of Latvia at the splendid venue of the Riga Castle. This year was no exception, with President Raimonds Vējonis, together with First Lady Iveta Vējone proving welcoming hosts for this occasion.
The address given by President Vējonis to tour participants stressed the importance of their opportunity to become directly acquainted with Latvian nature, culture and history, as well as to personally meet relevant Latvian personalities of today. “You have seen Latvia with your own eyes, heard the Latvian language with your own ears and felt the friendship and openness of Latvian people with your own hearts. These experiences will allow you to better understand what you have learned about Latvia in your Sunday schools, read in books or the internet, or heard from your parents and grandparents.” With these words, President Vējonis fare-welled participants of the tour, adding his hope that they maintain their ties with Latvia, and welcomed them to return to pursue their future studies and careers.
President Vējonis also thanked the students of both Krāslava High School and the Kalvene Primary School from Aizpute who, as part of this project, welcomed these students from overseas into their midst.
Kā jau katru gadu, tad arī šogad Amerikas, Austrālijas un Kanādas latviešu izcelsmes jauniešiem bija iespēja piedalīties izglītojošajā braucienā “Sveika Latvija”. Šī gada braucieni bija no 9.06 līdz 23.06 un no 10.08. līdz 24.08
Viena no tradīcijām ir tikšanās ar Latvijas Valsts prezidentu Rīgas pilī, kur šogad jauniešus sagaidīja gan LV presidents Raimonds Vējonis, gan kundze Iveta Vējone.
Valsts prezidents, uzrunājot projekta dalībniekus, uzsvēra, ka viņiem bija lieliska iespēja iepazīst Latvijas dabu, kultūru un vēsturi, kā arī tikties ar spilgtām personībām. “Jūsu acis redzēja Latviju, ausis dzirdēja latviešu valodu, un sirdis sajuta Latvijas cilvēku draudzību un atvērtību. Šie iespaidi papildinās tās zināšanas par Latviju, ko esat guvuši, apmeklējot svētdienas skolas, lasot grāmatas, meklējot informāciju internetā un klausoties vecāku un vecvecāku stāstos,” teica Raimonds Vējonis, novēlot projekta dalībniekiem nezaudēt saikni ar Latviju un atgriezties šeit mācību vai darba gaitās.
Valsts prezidents arī pateicās Krāslavas ģimnāzijas un Aizputes novada Kalvenes pamatskolas audzēkņiem, kuri projekta ietvaros pie sevis uzņēma ārzemju latviešu bērnus.
